Panthère et paon devant le Bayon, Angkor, vers 1920

India ink, pencil and gouache on Japon impérial, signed lower left, dry stamp and panther study in the margin.
22 x 29 cm

First sketch for an Aubusson tapestry, to be made by Frédéric Danton.

Provenance :
Private collection, France

The white border, executed here in gouache by the artist, was to translate into the tapestry's circumference, the decoration of which had yet to be defined. Jouve eventually abandoned this motif, preferring a panther killing a parrot (rather than a peacock), while retaining the Angkor décor and proportions.
The finished tapestry was exhibited in December 1921 at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris, during the first exhibition of the “Groupe des Quatre”, under number 35.

Certificate of authenticity issued by Mr. Dominique Suisse, the artist's successor.
